TUSC (Transport for Ugandan Sick Children)
The Main Objective
To reduce the severity of illness and suffering in children by providing free transport to the Children’s Hospital, and to help children and families access preventative health care.
Aims
To enable children to attend for medical care at an earlier stage than they might otherwise in an episode of illness
To reduce the amount of suffering that a child may experience by facilitating transport to the Children’s Hospital
To reduce the risks of illness and accident complications by facilitating transport to hospital
To facilitate attendance for preventative health care for babies and children
Where possible to share information about disease prevention measures
Other Information
TUSC will arrive at named villages at a regular and pre-arranged time to transport any child that needs to attend hospital, up to a capacity allowed by the vehicle. If demand is great and time allows then more than one trip may be carried out from any village or area but cannot be gauranteed
No child will be transported without the accompaniment of a responsible adult
TUSC will not contribute towards any medical costs; however, there will be no charge for the transport to and from the village
If a child is admitted to the hospital TUSC cannot commit to providing return transport when the child is discharged
If there is capacity then pregnant women or sick adults may access the transport to the main hospital; sick children take priority, however the driver is authorised to use discretion and common sense if an emergency arises in his presence
The vehicle will be fully insured to carry passengers
The driver is not medically trained and will not provide any health care to the people being transported
Destinations will be Nelfinya Children’s Hospital and Jinja Main Hospital only
The scheme is purely voluntary and is funded by well-wishers in the UK
Liaison will continue with staff at the Children’s Hospital to ensure that villages/areas with high levels of need are prioritised for the transport scheme
The driver will use discretion and his decision is final.
No coercion of the driver will be tolerated; neither will any intimidation. Anyone presenting aggressively will not be transported and the police may be informed.
